Two steps you can take to avoid major car repair bills

A major car repair bill can have a serious impact on the health of your finances. As such, it's sensible to do what you can to minimise your risk of incurring these types of large bills. Here are two ways to do this.

Don't skip your car service appointment

If your car appears to be in good working order and money is a little bit tight, you may feel tempted to give your upcoming car service appointment a miss. However, if you don't want to incur enormous repair bills in the future, it's important not to succumb to this temptation.

The tasks that a mechanic performs during a routine car service appointment can significantly reduce the chances of your vehicle developing serious faults that could cost a great deal of money to fix. For example, when performing a car service, most mechanics will turn on the vehicle's engine so that they can check the colour of the exhaust smoke. If they find that the exhaust smoke has an abnormally greyish hue, they may then proceed to check for an engine oil leak inside the engine's combustion chamber (as grey smoke of this kind usually only occurs when engine oil is being burnt somewhere inside the car).

They will then identify the source of the leak and clean up any residual oil left behind on the engine's components before any serious damage is done to your car. If, in this situation, you had skipped your car servicing appointment and the leak ended up going unnoticed for weeks or perhaps even months, your car's engine block or your exhaust could end up catching on fire whilst you're driving. In addition to being incredibly dangerous, this could also result in these important and expensive components having to be replaced (a process which could cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars).

Watch out for early warning signs of problems

If you don't want to pay any hefty repair bills in the near future, it's worth keeping a close eye on your car's performance and taking your vehicle to a mechanic as soon as you notice any early warning signs that something is amiss with it. This will enable your mechanic to nip the issue in the bud before this minor defect turns into a more complex, expensive-to-fix problem.

For example, if you hear a screeching noise every time you use your brakes, this probably means that your brake pads have to be replaced. This is a cheap and quick job which can usually be completed within an hour, for just a few dollars. However, if you choose to ignore this sound, the screeching will eventually be replaced by a grinding noise; this is the sound of the brake callipers scraping against the rotors, as there is no brake pad material left to act as a barrier between these two components.

In this situation, you would need to have your mechanic replace the rotors and the callipers as well as the brake pads; this could take quite a while and cost a great deal of money.
